Arizona has one of the highest food insecurity rates in the country. Children, families and seniors struggle daily to put food on the table. Last year, our member food banks and their partner agencies distributed more than 123 million pounds of food to hungry people in all fifteen counties.
However, food lines continue to grow and food banks are having trouble keeping up with demand. Agencies face the challenge of receiving, storing and distributing food, especially fresh produce, to hungry people. Limited refrigeration capacity, lack of reliable transportation, small distribution sites and volunteer capacity all make getting food to clients more difficult.
We are pleased to announce that AAFB, due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, is providing $100,000 in grants to agencies across the state to help address these challenges. Over 60 applications were received for support in five main areas: 1) Refrigeration, 2) Transportation, 3) Staff/Volunteer Professional Development, 4) Technology, and 5) Improving Client Self-Sufficiency. AAFB was able to award 22 grants that will address a variety of challenges that exist in the supply chain for local agencies to meet food needs in their community.
