AzFBN is the “administrative heart and home” of the collaborative task force that saves fresh produce from going to waste across the region.

Diverse stakeholders in the southwest region of the United States, starting with food banks in Arizona, are aligned on a common mission to end hunger with nutritious and fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste.

Today, the 16-member Southwest Produce Co-Op, administratively coordinated by the Arizona Food Bank Network, facilitates access to 40-50 million pounds of donated food each year – most of which is produce that reaches the tables of neighbors from Arizona to Kansas. Over the years, the SPC has expanded efforts to packaging bulk product, repacking previously rejected loads into mixed produce boxes, and piloting an equity-focused job training program.

The SPC was formed 8 years ago and continues to grow and innovate today. Because these 16 hunger fighting agencies are constantly communicating and working toward a common goal, they are able to efficiently share loads that are expressly needed in areas affected by food insecurity.

Nutritious foods like salad mix from Yuma, Arizona, melons from Maricopa County, thousands of russet potatoes grown in Wilcox, Arizona and so much more are reaching tables as far as Kansas every week thanks to the collaborative work of the SPC.
